| Aspirin Therapy | |
|
Aspirin has been used to prevent cardiovascular events in people with and without diabetes. Several large studies have shown that a 75-325 mg dose of aspirin per day can prevent strokes and heart attacks in many people. This includes men and women of different ages, people with and without a history of cardiovascular disease (CVD), and people with high blood-pressure. Recommendations vary based upon a persons age and medical history. Aspirin therapy should be considered for people over 40 who have diabetes and another risk factor for CVD. For people younger than 30 years, when the risk of CVD is low, there is no evidence that aspirin therapy is beneficial. People under 21 should not use aspirin therapy because of the risk of Reyes syndrome. Always talk to your doctor before taking any new medication including aspirin therapy. |
