People with diabetes are at a greater risk for cardiovascular disease than other people. But you can avoid it by reducing the number of risk factors that you have for it. These include:

  • dyslipidemia (unhealthy blood cholesterol levels)
  • hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • smoking
  • a family history of premature heart disease
  • albuminuria (the presence of the protein albumin in the urine, a sign of kidney damage)
