Eye Damage

Eye damage, technically called retinopathy, can be associated with prolonged diabetes. It occurs for some of the same reasons that kidney damage can occur, so the prevention of it is also similar. Controlling blood glucose and blood pressure can prevent eye damage.

Retinopathy can be treated. A procedure know as laser photocoagulation surgery can often prevent further loss of sight, making early detection very important. Make sure you have your eyes examined every year by an optometrist or ophthalmologist.
