Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)

Hypertension (high blood pressure) affects 20-60% of people who have diabetes. Having hypertension increases your risk for cardiovascular disease and other complications like kidney damage and blindness.

Diet and exercise are often enough to treat hypertension. Several studies have shown that modest lifestyle changes can be effective at lowering blood pressure. For people with mild hypertension they may often be all a person needs, while for others medication may be necessary as well. These changes in diet and exercise include:

  • reducing sodium intake
  • weight loss (when appropriate)
  • reducing alcohol consumption
  • increasing physical activity
