Exercise

Physical activity is the magic pill everyone is looking for. Regular exercise has been shown to prevent cardiovascular disease, lower triglycerides in the blood, increase HDL, reduce blood pressure, contribute to weight loss, prevent weight gain, improve well being, and possibly prevent type 2 diabetes. Exercise causes your muscles to use up more of the glucose in your blood, and therefore can improve blood sugar control and insulin sensitivity.

Increasing physical activity does not have to mean going to a gym. Everyday activities like vacuuming, raking leaves, and walking the dog count as physical activity — anything that gets you moving.

Before beginning a physical activity program, see your doctor for a detailed medical evaluation. Regular exercise is recommended for all patients with diabetes who are capable of participating, but there may be special considerations that you need to know about. And remember, always make sure that you are wearing proper footwear.
